1400 West Randolph is on its way up in the far-off West Loop

1400 West Randolph will deliver 278 apartments to the far reaches of the West Loop.

Marquette Companies has a pair of residential developments under construction at the outer reaches of the West Loop. This one, 1400 West Randolph, should make quite a statement when rises to its full 26-story height.

1400 West Randolph is situated on the corner of Randolph and Ogden. It 278 rental units (studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments) and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Construction has been underway since last year, when foundation, tower crane and full-build permits were all issued.

Brininstool + Lynch is the design architect.

Per Dennis Rodkin Monday in Crain’s, opening is expected next summer. He got a good preview of Millennium Park views from the higher-floor condos once they’re completed. It’s a good read.

Tower crane stub in the house! No, seriously. They built a house for it.

Flag, Crane, Plane, and Train at 1125 West Van Buren.

Chicago’s most unique new residence is at 1125 West Van Buren, where Tandem has built a new house for its tower crane. Closed in on three sides, with the south façade left open for views of the Eisenhower Expressway(?), the humble abode will protect the crane stub from animal attacks and ogling Target shoppers. More importantly, crews will be on site this week to erect the full tower crane, making up for the one Chicago just lost at 717 South Clark.

Construction has begun at 1125 West Van Buren

Dirt is being disrupted at 1125 West Van Buren. No glamour. Just heavy equipment doing the dirty work. But soon progress will be highly visible from the Eisenhower Expressway. It’s the start of what will be 20 stories and 200 apartments in a tower designed by Antunovich Associates for Tandem. For now, Keller NA has their distinctive blue & gold equipment on site, handling the caisson work.

A tower crane permit was issued February 6, followed by the building permit on the 11th. That means Tandem, acting once again as developer and CG, is good to go vertical. They hope to have 1125 open to residents next summer.

The tower crane I missed at Aspire is missed no more

Just a day after I posted about not making it to 2111 South Wabash in time to snap the tower crane, Robert Burke comes along and fills my inbox with photos. Crane going up, crane coming down, crane building a building, the whole sequence. Thank you, Robert!

2111 South Wabash Aspires to be clad all over

That’s Power Construction in the tweet above, letting the world know about the topping out of 2111 South Wabash in the South Loop back in December. That same week, Draper & Kramer, the developer of 2111, announced not only the topping out, but also the project’s new name — Aspire Residences.

The 24-story, 275-unit apartment building took down the tower crane in late January. (A tower crane I saw, but didn’t get a photo of. I hate missing them.) Aspire is a design by SCB. It’s on schedule to open this summer.

Tower crane permit signals the beginning of 1125 West Van Buren

The tower crane permit for 1125 West Van Buren, issued Feb 6, is the first new construction permit issued for the future apartment tower.

To be fair, the demolition permit in March of last year was probably the real start of construction at 1125 West Van Buren, but a tower crane permit is far more glamorous. And that was issued yesterday.

1125 West Van Buren will be a 20-story, 200-unit apartment building from Tandem, who will also be performing general contracting duties. The tower is a design by Antunovich Associates. If that combo sounds familiar, this is the same team that just wrapped up Avenir in River West.

The last time I visited Solstice On The Park, it was *almost* done. That was close to a year ago. Now, it’s finished, and being lived in. And still very very cool. I’ll attempt to prove that opinion with the two dozen photos included below.

Stuff That’s Done: 5252 South Cornell shines in Hyde Park

I like that. Just numbers. 5252.

That’s the name of the recently-opened apartment tower at 5252 South Cornell in Hyde Park. This is a development by Mac Properties, the same folks responsible for bringing Solstice on the Park to this neighborhood. The two of them make a striking pair.

Linn-Mathes was the general contractor on 5252, just as they were on Solstice. Solomon Cordwell Buenz was the design architect, and I want to hi-five everyone there for this one. I lucked out and got here on a sunny day — I know, a sunny day in Chicago, right? — and the building looks fantastic in the sunlight.

The 26-story building contains 246 apartments, from studios to three-bedroom units. 5252 opened in Fall 2019.
