Construction Progress: The Viceroy Chicago making beds in the Gold Coast

Viceroy Chicago hotel

The Viceroy Chicago hotel, at 1118 North State Street in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

The tower crane is down and the curtain wall is up at the Viceroy Chicago hotel in the Gold Coast. As Power Construction wraps up work on the exterior of the Goettsch Partners-designed 18-story, 180-room tower, remember that we’ll still have the pleasure of watching more construction here. That’s because the 4-story facade of the old Cedar Hotel, painstakingly dismantled and stored off site, will be pieced back together again to front this property. All that work is on schedule to be completed, and the Viceroy Chicago opened, this year.

2950 North Sheridan is feeling….Clad all over

2950 North Sheridan

Shiny new glass all over 2950 North Sheridan, evident even on a gloomy day.

The Dave Clark Five new what 2950 North Sheridan is feeling right now. Topped out and glassed in, work is being concentrated on the interior details. Booth Hansen designed the 19-story building for Wirtz Realty. You can expect 82 apartments and 113 parking spaces within the curvy glass tower. Power Construction has been on the build since breaking ground in September of 2015.

Addison & Clark digs in at the plate

Addison & Clark

Digging in the sand at Addison & Clark.

Just outside Wrigley Field, which is the home of the WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CHICAGO CUBS, foundation work continues on the Addison & Clark development, located, as fate would have it, at Addison and Clark Streets.

Caissons are done, and now the foundation is being dug. Digging in is not something you could do back in the day, anywhere near Wrigley Field, if Bob Gibson was on the mound. But that’s another matter. What’s important here are the 148 apartments, 400+ parking spots, and in the ballpark (heh) of 150,000 square feet of retail space. The SCB design is being developed by a joint venture of M&R Development and Bucksbaum Retail Properties. That’s Power Construction out there doing the dirty work.

625 West Adams-watch continues in the West Loop

625 West Adams

All’s quiet for the night at 625 West Adams, the SCB-designed office tower coming to the West Loop.

If I haven’t said it already, I highly recommend everyone get a construction site right outside the window. It should be a window that doesn’t open, so you don’t get as much noise. Or dust. Height helps too. Then you just need a zoom lens to keep tabs on the action.

Power Construction is working on the fifth and final parking level at 625 West Adams, the 20-story office tower from CA Ventures and White Oak Realty. Needless to say, it’s mesmerizing to watch.

Not just any single family residence rises up in River North

455 West Superior

The five-story, single family home at 455 West Superior Street.

Chasing single-family construction in Chicago would probably feel like a fever dream. Maybe in a small town like Mars, Pennsylvania, or Conover, Wisconsin, that would be possible. But not here.

But there is one single-family home being built that can’t be ignored. The city filed a permit for it back in March, to the tune of $9,980,000.00. Yep, just under ten million. Five stories, one family, with caissons. A permit so stunning, even  Dennis Rodkin at Crain’s reported it. And in June, I watched the soil start to turn. But then…I forgot about it.

Until this week, when I went by the lot at 455 West Superior Street and saw four stories’ worth of erected steel. I guess they kept working on it, even though I wasn’t there to watch. Power Construction is out there building the Wheeler Kearns Architects-designed home. It’s shrouded in plastic and mystery for now, but at the rate it’s moving, we’ll get to see what it looks like soon.

165 North Desplaines joins glass action

165 North Desplaines glass

That’s a pretty row of glass at 165 North Desplaines.

And the glass action suits it.

With lots of new construction comes lots of new glass work. Add 165 North Desplaines to the list of the newly glazed. The 199-unit apartment building has about a floor-and-a-half of glass installed just above the podium, while overall construction has reached the 14th floor. and since this is planned to be a 14-story tower, the math would tell you 165 North Desplaines is close to topping out.

465 North Park puts on a show of its own on Illinois Street

465 North Park

465 North Park begins its climb skyward at North Park Drive and East Illinois Street in Streeterville.

Directly across East Illinois Street from the AMC River East 21 multiplex, 465 North Park is going all Hollywood with its real-life set design. Cast and crew from Power Construction have been toiling away ever since the City of Chicago yelled “ACTION” by granting a full building permit back in September.

In the First Act, Case Foundation started drilling caissons in July, which will play the supporting role in keeping 465 North Park’s 48 stories above ground where they belong. Produced by developer Jupiter Realty Company, the 444 apartments designed by Pappageorge Haymes Partners will also include 181 parking spaces and 11,650 square feet of retail/commercial space.

Expect 465 North Park to open in limited theaters in 2018. Because it’s only in Chicago.

Construction Progress: The Apple Store on the Magnificent Mile

The thing about high-profile two-story developments is, you can miss a lot of progress in a very short period of time. And I don’t want you missing that progress. So here are a few shots of the current state at the new Apple flagship store along the Chicago River at 401 North Michigan Avenue. Featuring the lowest tower crane in Chicago, the Apple Store also affords unobstructed construction views from multiple vantage points. Apple’s new location is expected to open in October 2018.

1001 West Chicago filling up old Gonnella site

1001 West Chicago

The pair of towers at 1001 West Chicago rise in River West.

The dual-tower, 363-unit apartment development 1001 West Chicago from Bond Companies and Morgan Holdings keeps rising in River West, as Power Construction crews have reached the eighth and ninth floors on the respective structures, on their way to 15 and 13 stories. Not bad for having only broken ground in September.

The FitzGerald Associates project will also include 10,000 square feet of retail space and parking for 300 cars. Remember, some of that parking is necessary for the retail space, especially considering a grocery store will take some of that allotment.
