Call it Ancora, call it Phase One of Riverline, call it whatever you want, but it’s growing. And will continue to do so until it reaches 29 stories. CMK Companies’ first portion of the Riverline development along the Chicago River is making its presence known in the South Loop. The podium has reached the fourth level, while a pair of cores shoot up through the center. You’ll find the best spots to view Lendlease’s handiwork along the Harrison Street bridge.

You can get a train’s-eye view of 412 North Wells right now by taking a relaxing Brown Line ride from the Merchandise Mart up to the Chicago Ave stop. Linn-Mathes is pushing the 9-story office building skyward, now that the residential tower next door, Hubbard221, is nearly topped out. (Is that 22 stories I count?)

Hubbard221 is the 193-unit apartment tower from developer Centrum Partners and designer Hirsch Associates Architects, the team that just saw a tower crane rise on their Wicker Park Connection property. As for this tower crane, it now has double duty to pull, as it tops off the taller tower while beginning to stretch the smaller structure vertically.

Construction Progress: 625 West Adams

625 West Adams, the 20-story office tower from co-developers White Oak Realty Partners and CA Ventures, continues adding steel beams in the West Loop. After watching the elevator core shoot skyward well ahead of the rest of the building, the main floors are catching up now, so expect to see the core start growing again soon. As of today, Power Construction crews are adding beams to the 17th floor, while concrete gets poured onto the 11th. The SCB-designed tower is on schedule to open in Spring 2018.

Eight Eleven Uptown puts a tower crane in the ground

Eight Eleven Uptown alters the skyline with a new tower crane.

Planted, sprouted, and in full bloom, there’s now a tower crane high above Eight Eleven Uptown.

The 27-story apartment tower from JDL Development and Harlem Irving Companies at 811 West Agatite Avenue got its permit on April 3, so that’s an impressive jump to action from Lendlease.

Hilton, Hilton, and Hilton progress at McCormick Place

This new tower crane at the three Hiltons at McCormick Place has to build 3 hotels.

The Prairie District’s newest tower crane is showing the fruits of its labor, as work moves past foundation stage and begins to progress upward at (ready for this?) the Hilton Garden Inn Chicago McCormick Center, the Hampton Inn by Hilton Chicago McCormick Center, and the Home2 Suites by Hilton Chicago McCormick Center.

Those three entities from Hilton, designed by Antunovich Associates, will be contained within this one 23-story, 466-room tower. McHugh Construction is the general contractor, and they’ve achieved the third dimension as the tower starts to stick up out of the ground.

3Eleven has topped out, endangering yet another Chicago Tower Crane

Word came down from Power Construction that 3Eleven, the 25-story apartment tower from The John Buck Company, topped out this past Friday. Sure, that’s mostly good news. Good news in that the 245 apartments in the FitzGerald Associates-designed tower will are that much closer to being inhabitable. Good news in that the 3,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space can soon open to new businesses. Good news in that parishioners at Assumption Catholic Church will soon have parking again, after the church parking lot was removed to make room for 3Eleven.

But the topping out also means we lose another tower crane in Chicago. One of the pretty yellow ones, too. And you know how much I love those. Who else remembers August of last year, when the stub was first planted, like a newborn baby coming home from the hospital? Sigh. I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry….

625 West Adams holds its first day of glass

625 West Adams reached another construction milestone last week, installing the first few panes of the curtain wall facing Adams Street. As if all that steel above the podium wasn’t distracting enough, now I have all this glass to look forward to. Thanks, Power. Now I’ll get even less done around here.

Driving piles and breaking rocks at Eight Eleven Uptown.

Eight Eleven Uptown is the new apartment tower from JDL Development coming to the Uptown neighborhood. In the midst of clearing away remnants of the old Cuneo Hospital, foundation work is now underway on the 27-story, 381-unit tower at Montrose and Clarendon Avenues. Stalworth Underground is there as we speak, driving H-piles into the earth, even as American Demolition cleans up.

Riverline levels continue to rise

Ancora represents the first phase of the Riverline development in the South Loop.

Progress continues at Ancora, the first phase of the huge Riverline project CMK Companies is building along the Chicago River in the South Loop. The 29-story tower is barely above street level, yet somehow it already appears to be soaring. With the help of Pepper Construction on concrete work, Lendlease has reached the third floor on some parts of the site.

The Perkins+Will design will bring 452 apartments to this first phase of Riverline. Future phases will ultimately bring nine more buildings, 16,500 square feet of retail space, and a new riverwalk to the neighborhood.

Hello, Eight Eleven Uptown: The Montrose – Clarendon project has a new name

With the former Cuneo Hospital now history, the latest project from JDL Development and The Harlem Irving Companies, designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, is underway. And according to the JDL website, with the new beginning comes a new name: Eight Eleven Uptown.

The Eight Eleven comes from the apartment tower’s new address, 811 West Agatite Avenue. The Uptown, as you may have guessed, comes from its location in the Uptown neighborhood. The 27-story tower will include 381 apartments and nearly 30,000 square feet of retail space.

Stalworth Underground is on-site currently, driving H-piles into the ground; Lendlease is the general contractor.

The foundation permit for Eight Eleven Uptown was issued February 17.
