Construction Stubdate: No. 508 plants a tower crane in Lake View

Shout-out to Twitter user @sigalfano who let me know, after some guesswork, that a tower crane stub had been planted at No. 508 (508 West Diversey Parkway) on Friday. It joins One South Halsted in the stub group, with full assembly likely while I’m in England. So take pictures and videos of it going up and send them the blog’s way.

This is the only tower crane in the Chicago skies right now for Macon Construction Group, the general contractor tasked with building the 12-story, 53-apartment Pappageorge Haymes design.

No. 508 slowly putting down a foundation in Lake View

The luxury apartment tower from Broder Properties at 508 West Diversey Parkway continues its foundation work in Lake View, albeit slowly. Our last look back in January showed some pretty deep digging and shoring, and now considerable concrete has been poured on the site. Designed by Pappageorge Haymes Partners, No. 508, as dubbed by Broder, will rise to 12 stories, have 53 units, and, according to the renderings, include some ground-floor retail. Completion of No. 508 is slated for this year, so the crew from general contractor Macon Construction Group has their tasks cut out for them.

Addison & Clark reaches street level by Opening Day

The tower crane at Addison & Clark stands stoic beyond the lights at Wrigley Field.

There will be a lot going on at the corner of Clark and Addison this week. Most of it will center around 1060 West Addison, to be precise. But expect plenty of activity at Addison & Clark as well.

A combined effort from developers M&R Development and Bucksbaum Retail Properties, Addison & Clark will be a mixed-use project consisting of 148 apartments, a 405-space indoor parking garage, and a whopping 146,000 square feet of commercial space. SCB designed the development; Power Construction is the general contractor.

With the foundation dug out (heh — dugout) work has risen to about even with the sidewalk along Clark Street, while the most noticeable feature along the Addison Street side are the huge mounds of dirt.

The Hotel Zachary not done, but ready, for Opening Day at Wrigley Field

The Hotel Zachary won’t make the roster of the 2017 Chicago Cubs. But 2018 will be its year.

Which is to say, we’re all ready for Opening Day at Wrigley Field.

As the Chicago Cubs return home to play baseball for the first time since winning the 2016 World Series, the Hotel Zachary continues to climb on the other side of Clark Street. Though still not renamed The Russell On Addison, sadly, the Hotel Zachary is Hickory Street Capital’s effort to bring stylish hospitality to The Friendly Confines. Designed by VOA Associates, the 7-story hotel will have 175 guest rooms, retail spaces, and multiple dining options.

It’s being built by Walsh Construction, which is probably why you’ve been seeing “W” flags all over Wrigleyville for the past year or so.

It’s a 2-fer on North Broadway in Lake View

There are two projects happening right now in the Lake View neighborhood on successive blocks of North Broadway.

At 3833 North Broadway, DLG Management is building an 8-story, 134-unit residential project at the intersection of North Broadway and West Sheridan Road. Designed by Jonathan Splitt Architects, 3833 North Broadway will include two basements, according to the foundation permit, and below-grade parking. Which explains all the deep excavating going on.

Seven addresses, encompassing 3819 through 3835 North Broadway as well as 731 West Sheridan, were demolished to make room for this one. The north-most, 3835, had its historic facade dismantled, to be reused for the facings on both Broadway and Sheridan. DLG is handling its own general contractor duties.

734 West Sheridan

Across Sheridan Road on the northeast corner of the intersection, Vermilion Development received a building permit on Monday to construct a 100-unit project where a gas station once stood. A design by Hirsch Associates Architects (Centrum Hubbard, 412 North Wells, Centrum Bucktown), and assigned to an address of 734 West Sheridan, this one will be 10 stories high. Arco/Murray, the GC on Hirsch’s Centrum Bucktown job, will be the general contractor here as well.

Addison & Clark didn’t just get a tower crane; it got a HUGE tower crane

The tower crane at Addison & Clark can reach every building in Lake View. It seems.

Addison & Clark, the huge mixed-use development being sandwiched around the Sports World Chicago store across from Wrigley Field, erected a tower crane earlier this month, and the thing covers more ground than Jason Heyward and Dexter Fowler (sniff) did last season. And for good reason: in order to reach all points of the L-shaped construction site, the longer the crane, there better.

Foundation work is still being done at the site of 140 future apartments, 150,000 square feet of retail space, and 400 parking spots, but that crane’s already pulling its weight, as piles are shored up and pillars jut out of the ground.

Clarkview wedges its way into Lake View

If you’re claustrophobic, you may need to open a window before reading on, as this is a story about tight spaces.

There is no room for error — heck, there’s no room for much of anything — in the tiny space at 3226 North Clark Street in Lake View, where Stalworth Underground has squeezed caisson equipment through the alley to begin work on a new Transit Oriented Development.

Clarkview, a design from Jonathan Splitt Architects (you remember them from the Blue Plate Catering digs) will be seven stories tall and weigh in at 24 residential units. Once home to The Alley, where the cool kids dressed, the facade of the old structure is being preserved and implemented into the new building. That means access to the lot from Clark Street isn’t possible, leaving the alley off Belmont next to the new Lakeview 3200 as the only way in and out.

Stalworth sent over some photos showing just how tight the squeeze was. I looked, and couldn’t find the smallest morsel of sawdust under any of the electrical poles. That’s allowed them to stockpile caisson equipment and get to work in the tiny, enclosed lot.

Addison & Clark gets the makings of a new tower crane. Some assembly (still) required.

Food for thought: If The Chicago Cubs were to hire former Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers, they could have a front office that includes (Kevin) Towers and Crane (Kenney)

Where was I? Oh yeah. Just outside Wrigley Field, which is the home of the WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CHICAGO CUBS, the Addison & Clark development is getting a shiny new trophy of its own, in the form a tall, skinny tower crane. Crews were assembling it Tuesday, and will most assuredly have it ready to lift heavy stuff by Friday. As you know, February has traditionally been the month when pitchers and catchers and tower cranes report to kick off the baseball season.

Chicago Cubs office workers get a giant screen, but they can’t watch it

In a cruel twist, personnel for the Chicago Cubs, winners of the 2016 World Series, who’ll be working in the new office building next to Wrigley Field, have been watching the installation of a mega-giant big screen on the exterior of the 6-story structure. And, as you can see in the photos, the screen faces away from their future offices. So they won’t be able to watch it. What’s worse, many offices will have their views blocked by the screen. Double whammy. Still, I wouldn’t mind having my office there. Mr. Ricketts?

2950 North Sheridan is feeling….Clad all over

Shiny new glass all over 2950 North Sheridan, evident even on a gloomy day.

The Dave Clark Five new what 2950 North Sheridan is feeling right now. Topped out and glassed in, work is being concentrated on the interior details. Booth Hansen designed the 19-story building for Wirtz Realty. You can expect 82 apartments and 113 parking spaces within the curvy glass tower. Power Construction has been on the build since breaking ground in September of 2015.
