Amid foundation work, 465 North Park makes space for a tower crane

Crews set rebar for the tower crane foundation at 465 North Park.

465 North Park, the Pappageorge Haymes Partners-designed, Jupiter Realty Company-developed 48-story, 444-unit apartment tower in Streeterville, received a tower crane permit from the City of Chicago on Tuesday of last week. On Tuesday of this week, Power Construction crews could be seen setting the foundation that will hold the crane in place.

Crews are assembling Chicago’s latest tower crane at 1001 West Chicago today. The crane was permitted back on August 23. Look for more photos in this space as they become available. (In other words…”when I can get up there to take some.”)

Apple makes headlines with new tower crane at Chicago flagship store

Chicago's Apple flagship store

That’s a crane-building crane (in yellow) building a building-building crane (in red)

Headphone jack or no headphone jack, it was hard to miss the tower crane being assembled at the new Chicago Apple flagship store on Michigan Avenue Thursday. Although, if you happened to be looking for it, but missed it, it could be because you were looking too high. Unlike most tower crane, which tend to, you know, “tower” over their respective job sites, the Apple Store crane stands barely three stories in the air. But that’s really all the height you need, when your two-story building has only half its height above street level.

We’ve been waiting for this tower crane for weeks. Luckily, Twitter user @RobertLoerzel, as he’s known to do from time time, was wandering around town Wednesday night tweeting photos, including these, showing tower crane parts awaiting assemblage.

Clearly, that meant I had to be on Michigan Avenue in the morning to catch the action. Which leads to this: more photos of the Chicago Apple Store than you would ever really appreciate. But I took them for you anyway. A few from the morning, and then a few later in the day, after the boom had been attached. Enjoy.

Quick Look: The 3Eleven tower crane. (It’s more of a late look)

3Eleven tower crane

The tower crane at 3Eleven is up and running. But mostly up.

They set up the crane at 3Eleven in River North the day before vacation. So it’s been up and running for a week and a half. Monday was my first chance to see it. And now you can see what I saw when I walked by.

It’s already dragging things around the lot at 311 West Illinois Street.

A Crane Cruise on Alaska’s Resurrection Bay

I wasn’t looking for a reason to post photos from our trek through Alaska, so much as an excuse. A crane on a barge provided it.

The tour through Resurrection Bay from Seward, Alaska is supposed to include the glaciers of Kenai Fjords National Park. Sadly, even glaciers aren’t powerful enough to shine through rainy, foggy days. But there are still sights to be seen. Eagles, otters, harbor seals, and puffins, wildlife not generally part of the scenery on the Chicago River.

And the above barge. I know, most folks would be scanning the mountains for birds and bears, or watching the water for porpoises and orcas (we saw neither), but if you’re even a bit surprised I chose to watch the crane on a barge, you haven’t been paying attention to this space.

Another day, another tower crane. This time, it’s 3Eleven

3Eleven tower crane

Another shiny yellow crane is shooting up through the ground in Chicago.

This one’s at 3Eleven in River North. They planted a seedling last week, and darned if that thing hasn’t thrived in the rich soil at 311 West Illinois Street. There is no physical evidence to suggest it has anything to do with being sewn right up against Assumption Catholic Church, but then again, there’s an equal amount of evidence to disprove that theory.

A 5-day Tower Crane event at 625 West Adams

Pictured above is the crew from Central Contractors Service, calmly going about their day from the middle of the sky.

If you didn’t know by now, a tower crane was assembled at 625 West Adams over the past few days. Here now are several thousand photos showing the chronology of that process:

I told you Thursday morning it looked like 3Eleven was getting ready for a tower crane of its own. And just a few hours later, there it was. Here are a few extra looks, from the L, and from the ground:

Tower Crane Update: 625 West Adams

There are tower crane parts all over the West Loop today. And you know what? It’s fantastic.

Crews continue assembly of the giant yellow Liebherr 542 HC-L 18-36 Litronic (I can read permits) at 625 West Adams.

This massive street crane was the first piece of equipment on hand for the tower crane assembly.

Most construction companies will tell you they have their own schedules to keep, unaffected by outside influences. That’s okay. I’m still going to pretend I’m responsible for getting the tower crane on site at 625 West Adams.

Parts began arriving Thursday, and crews immediately got to work putting them together. It looks like weather may slow things down today.
