Little remains of the W. C. Reebie & Brother storage building in Uptown

Demolition of the W. C. Reebie & Brother storage building in Uptown, Chicago Nov 20, 2024.

Demolition of the former W. C. Reebie & Brother storage building has left little remaining of the Uptown structure, save for the rearmost shell of the five stories that stood on the site for 100+ years. The George Kingsley-designed building at 5035 North Broadway was purchased in 2018 by TimeLine Theatre; they’ll soon begin turning the property into their new home, once demo contractor Milburn Demolition has wrapped up work.

The first iteration of the new theatre would have saved the building’s façade, but TimeLine deemed that plan unfeasible due to a number of factors, including further evaluation of the structural integrity of the existing edifice. Architecture firm HGA then drew up new designs to completely redo the front portions of the building for performance spaces, while integrating the rear levels for office use.

TimeLine Theatre’s new venue is set to include a range of features aimed at enhancing both visitor and artist experiences. Plans highlight a lobby café and bar alongside a 250-seat black box theatre designed for flexibility and transformation. The space will also house exhibit galleries to complement TimeLine’s immersive and interactive lobby experiences. Behind the scenes, the facility will offer dedicated areas for collaboration, including a rehearsal room, production and design studios, and staff offices. Additionally, their Living History program will have its own dedicated space, which will also serve as a resource for community meetings and events.

TimeLine has raised nearly $40 million toward toward the new facility. They expect to begin putting on shows here early in 2026.

4600 North Marine in Uptown moves ever closer to exterior completion

4600 North Marine is topped out in Uptown

Don’t get me wrong; I know there’s still a good deal of work yet to be done to the exterior of 4600 North Marine in Uptown. But the bricks are on, the windows are in, and the crane is down. As you’ll see, Gilbane is nearing the home stretch.

Work continues at the topped-out 4600 North Marine Drive Uptown apartment tower

The closest tower crane to the B.U.C. HQ is still dong yeoman’s work at 4600 North Marine, the fully-grown 303-unit apartment tower in Uptown.

Congrats go out to the development team on topping out the 12-story building last month:

Design Architect Valerio Dewalt Train Associates
General Contractor Gilbane Building Company
Concrete Contractor Adjustable Concrete Construction (drone shots!)

Permits in hand, 4600 North Marine tears up a parking lot

The Weiss Hospital parking lot at Marine Drive and Wilson Avenue is gone. Toast. Rubble. History. Ground prep is underway after the first permits were issued early this month by the city for a new 12-story, 303-unit residential development here. The foundation permit came through on the first of the month. And no waiting on a tower crane permit; that was issued September 7.

A few photos at Platform 4611

Platform 4611 (4611 North Broadway) in Uptown is just a few blocks from home, and only a half-block out of the way of my commute to work and back. So I figured it was about time to lug the real camera out there and grab a few shots.

And remember, Stan’s stans, there will be donuts here soon.

McHugh Construction is the general contractor. According to their website, the nine-story Platform 4611 will consist of 200 rental apartments atop 10,000 square feet of retail space, with parking spots for 22 cars and 178 bikes.

Pappageorge Haymes Partners is the design architect.

The John Buck Company and Free Market Ventures are the developers.

The following photo gallery includes bonus coverage of redevelopment work at 1050 West Wilson next door.

Eight Eleven Uptown approaches the finish line

Eight Eleven Uptown May 2018

Eight Eleven Uptown sits nearly complete at Montrose and Clarendon.

The tower crane is gone, cladding is complete, and Lendlease has entered the home stretch at Eight Eleven Uptown.

Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, and co-developed by JDL Development and Harlem Irving Companies, the residential tower at 811 West Agatite in the Uptown neighborhood will deliver 381 apartments and 36,000 square feet of retail space upon completion.

Opening will include a new Treasure Island grocery store, which this neighborhood badly needs.

Clayco getting ready to build 12 stories, 149 units in Uptown

Sheridan and Wilson

A rendering from CRG of Sheridan & Wilson, coming to 4555 N Sheridan in Uptown.

A foundation permit was issued Wednesday for 4555 North Sheridan Road in Uptown. Developed by CRG, Sheridan and Wilson will be a 12-story tower containing 149 apartments. Included will be 5,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, and outside parking spots for 29 cars.

This is a real in-house development. The design architect, BatesForum, and general contractor, Clayco, are both integrated companies with CRG under the Clayco brand. (You may recall this team from the Cook County Central Campus Health Center build.) Because when you want something done right, sometimes it’s best to do it all yourself.

As you can see in the photos, site prep is underway. No word yet on an anticipated opening date.

Eight Eleven Uptown nears the top

Eight Eleven Uptown February 2018

Eight Eleven Uptown is very close to topping out, as seen from North Broadway and looking straight up North Clarendon.

First of all, let me thank the Thursday-morning skies for clearing up just enough to get some sunlight and breaking clouds for these shots of Eight Eleven Uptown. It looked magnificent.

Also, thanks to Lendlease for labeling floor numbers on the hoist so theycan be seen from the street. Using the last-marked floor, 22, and counting upward, it looks like construction crews are working on the 26th level, while the core has reached 27. This being a 27-story tower, Eight Eleven Uptown is very close to topping out. That’s just math.

Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, and co-developed by JDL Development and Harlem Irving Companies, the tower at 811 West Agatite in the Uptown neighborhood will deliver 381 apartments and 36,000 square feet of retail space upon completion, including a Treasure Island grocery store.
