The tower crane at Hyatt House West Loop, as it neared completion Thursday.

Perhaps I jumped the gun by including the tower crane at Hyatt House West Loop as an “in-service” crane in last week’s post. There may have been a glitch in set-up, as the cab was set atop the tower on Tuesday, but by evening it had been removed. No worries though, as Thursday saw completion.

It’s not often I visit a construction site twice just to see the tower crane go up, but I did for this one. So enjoy two galleries comprised of way more photos than you’ll ever need of tower crane assembly at Hyatt House West Loop.

Skender plants a tower crane stub for the new West Loop Hyatt House

Skender has planted a tower crane in the West Loop as they begin construction on Sterling Bay’s Hyatt House.

Very soon, we’ll be adding another name to the Chicago Tower Crane Survey. Skender has planted a stub at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and May Street in the West Loop, where they’re erecting the new Hyatt House hotel.

Sterling Bay is developing the 16-story hotel, conveniently located less than a block from the new McDonald’s HQ they’ve just built. Designed by Chicago firm Eckenhoff Saunders Architects, Hyatt House will bring nearly 200 guest rooms to the neighborhood, which you may have noticed is quite busy with construction. And that means people visiting new offices, and dropping in on residents of all those new apartments, will need a place to stay. Hyatt House will be ready for them.

There’s new glass atop the topped-out 210 North Carpenter

Off on the distance, glass is being added to the upper floors at 210 North Carpenter in the West Loop.

We’re seeing milestone after milestone in the impossibly-busy West Loop. Parking lots being plowed under, ground being broken, buildings topping out, glass being installed. It’s all happening, all over the neighborhood.

210 North Carpenter, the 12-story office building from Sterling Bay and the new HQ of general contractor Leopardo Companies, has recently met two of those milestones, having topped out and added the first level of glass to the tower. Curiously, that level is near the top, rather than the ground. The advantage to glazing your building that way, obviously, is to make it more noticeable to passers-by with cameras.

Case Foundation sends caissons into the ground at Sterling Bay’s 333 North Green office-tower project.

Perhaps you’ve noticed some recent activity in the Fulton Market District area of the West Loop. What’s that? Be more specific? Oh, a wise guy.

Yeah, there’s a lot going on in this very busy neighborhood. And it’s not about to slow down yet. Case in point: 333 North Green, a 19-story office tower from the West Loop’s own mega-active developer Sterling Bay. (Editor’s note: the three 3s in “GR333N” is a nice touch.) Designed by Gensler, 333 North Green will boast 555,524 square feet of office space from the 6th floor on up. The ground floor will provide 35,000 square feet of retail space, while floors 2-5 will contain parking spots for 300+ cars.

Case Foundation is on site at this very moment–go look, I can wait–drilling caissons into the earth. Power Construction, another ridiculously-busy entity right now in the West Loop, is the general contractor. Their task is to have 333 North Green open for business in 2019.

 

Sterling Bay’s 210 North Carpenter office building hits double digits

From the Ashland L platform, 210 North Carpenter rises against the Chicago skyline.

Construction progress has reached the tenth floor of Sterling Bay’s 12-story office building, 210 North Carpenter, in the West Loop. Those responsible for the progress, Leopardo Companies, get to choose from the most prime of spaces within the new digs, as Leopardo will be moving their headquarters here upon completion. The 200,000-square-foot, SCB-designed facility is slated for opening late this year.

The second tower crane is coming down at McDonald’s HQ

Piece by piece, the West Crane at McDonald’s new HQ is coming down.

West Crane at the new McDonald’s Headquarters in the West Loop was the first one to work, and now it’s the last one to go home. Of the two tower cranes, that is.

The two cranes were erected about a week apart back in February, did what McHugh Construction needed them to do, and East Crane came down back in September. West Crane stuck around to get the last of the heavy lifting accomplished, but this week sees it leaving the site as well. Trucks and personnel from Central Contractors Service were out there Thursday disassembling the second Peiner SK415 and lowering it to the ground.

With a stub in the ground at Hayden West Loop but no crane assembled there yet, the West Loop tower crane count drops to 7, tying it with the South Loop for the neighborhood lead. It’ll get it back soon though.

Special thanks to the CTA for holding up the west-bound trains so I’d have an unobstructed view of 210 North Carpenter as my Pink Line train rode past.

Leopardo Companies is busy building their own future headquarters at the West Loop intersection of Lake and Carpenter Streets. Sterling Bay’s 12-story office building got its first permit in August, and will be under construction for another 12+ months, with a target opening date of January 2019.

The Solomon Cordwell Buenz design will be loaded with the type of creature comforts we’re used to seeing in residential developments. Along with a fitness center with locker rooms, conference facilities, and parking for 40 cars, 210 North Carpenter will also feature a rooftop lap pool? — hold on…this is an office building. That can’t be right — daaaang. Indeed, there will be a pool on the roof. How’s that for a recruiting tool!

 

 

Tower Crane #34 is up and running at 210 North Carpenter

Chicago’s 34th active tower crane, and 57th of 2017, is up and running at 210 North Carpenter. This is Leopardo Companies’ only tower crane on the official count, and their first since finishing the heavy lifting a few blocks away at Fulton West.

The gang’s all here, as Leopardo Companies, Adjustable Forms, and Central Contractors Service set up the tower crane at 210 North Carpenter.

The West Loop is in a full-fledged tower-crane frenzy these days, and it won’t let up any time soon. We’ve barely had time to enjoy Tower Crane #33 in Chicago (raised over the weekend at 900 West) and already #34 is being erected, at Sterling Bay’s 210 North Carpenter.

This will be Chicago’s 57th tower crane of 2017, and the seventh crane operating currently in the West Loop.

Crews from Leopardo Companies, Adjustable Forms, and Central Contractors Service are all on site today, getting the Manitowoc MD485 set up, less than a week after the permit was issued, and only five days after the stub was planted in the ground.

Under the watchful eye of Chicago’s skyline, foundations are being dug for 210 North Carpenter. Coming soon: a tower crane.

210 North Carpenter has been cleared of caisson equipment, dirt has been smoothed over, and foundations are being dug for Sterling Bay’s 12-story, 200,000-square-foot office building in the West Loop. And on Tuesday September 26, the City of Chicago issued a tower crane permit for the project, allowing CG Leopardo Companies to go vertical on their own future offices.
