The tower crane is up, so there’s no stopping One Bennett Park now. All Lendlease crews need to do now it use it to stack 69 stories on top of each other, and the Robert A.M. Stern-designed (I’m infatuated with the project they designed for 220 Central Park South, remember?) tower will be ready for move-in. Seems pretty simple, right?

The 30-story, 300-unit apartment tower from Related Midwest at 1035 West Van Buren continues to show its true colors, all of them primary, alongside the Eisenhower Expressway in the West Loop. The blue, yellow, and red-covered construction site would have looked much better on a sunny day, but a quick check of the forecast shows it might be completed before we get more sunshine in Chicago. I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for the following photos from a dreary December afternoon.
The tower crane’s gone from the Ace Hotel.
It’s a sign of progress to see how many tower cranes are sprouting throughout Chicago. It’s another sign to see how many of those cranes are disappearing from construction sites around town. Done with one job; on to the next.
The Ace Hotel at 311 North Morgan Street in the West Loop is one of the latest area projects to lose its tower crane. The GREC Architects-designed 159-key, seven-story boutique hotel is topped out, and Sterling Bay is looking to have full houses in the very near future. General contractor Power Construction is doing what it can to make that happen soon.

If you were in Streeterville over the weekend for Open House Chicago, you may have walked right past the new tower crane stub at One Bennett Park. If you visited Moment, the new apartment tower at McClurg and Grand, to check out an apartment and/or the outdoor deck, you might have looked right over it as you gazed out at Lake Michigan and the skyline. But it is there.
The high-profile high rise got a tower crane permit way back on August 23, so we’ve been waiting awhile. But it’s going to be a pretty yellow crane, so the wait was worth it. Then again, it’s a tower crane; it’s always worth it.

Power Construction continues working at ground level on 165 North Desplaines. You remember 165 North Desplaines, right? Gerding Edlen is developing 199 apartments within the 14-story tower designed by GREC Architects. The existing building at the “back” of the lot, at 156 North Jefferson, is also being renovated into dwelling units as part of the project. That portion of the project has its own permits; one for renovation was filed in August.
The foundation permit for 165 North Desplaines was filed in June. We’re still waiting for the full building permit that will allow the tower to start going vertical.

Work continues on 1035 West Van Buren, Related Midwest‘s newest residential tower in the West Loop. The tower is beginning to make its presence known at the foot of what will soon be the end of the Jane Byrne Flyover ramp from the Dan Ryan Expressway onto the Eisenhower. The parking podium is up the the fourth floor, while the elevator core continues to climb from within.
The 30-story, 300-unit development by Morris Adjmi Architects of New York City, and Chicago’s own GREC Architects, is expected to be inhabitable before Baby New Year rings in 2018. Lendlease, the general contractor for 1035 West Van Buren, will see to that schedule being met.

Instead of a series of little holes, there’s now one large crater on East Grand Avenue. That’s where Lendlease is building Related Midwest’s One Bennett Park. Don’t worry if you blinked; One Bennett park will be in production for a good long time. Its 69 stories of splendor aren’t expected to be complete until 2019.

Hey, not so fast, 165 North Desplaines.
Yep, it’s up. Today, and maybe parts of yesterday, crews in the West Loop assembled a tower crane over top of North Desplaines Street. As you can’t quite tell from the photo above, it extends out over Randolph Street. Not that it will be lifting things that way, but it needs the reach to cover the lot from Desplaines east to Jefferson.

I don’t know what day Power Construction planted their tower crane at 165 North Desplaines in the West Loop. I just know it was there when I went by Thursday. And really, just seeing it there is enough.
To remind you, 165 North Desplaines will be a 14-story apartment tower from developer Gerding Edlen. Designed by Chicago’s GREC Architects, it will contain 199 units, with 99 parking spaces and some retail space on the ground floor.
That tower crane off in the distance is building the Ace Hotel, with the help of that cement rig.
An Ace Hotel is on the rise at 311 North Morgan Street in the West Loop. Developed by Sterling Bay, the Ace is dealing 159 keys to the primo location directly across the street from Google’s office building at 1000 Fulton Market.
The design, by Chicago’s GREC Architects, will feature a green roof, first-floor retail, and 30 underground parking spaces. Power Construction has been on the build since last fall, including painstaking efforts to preserve the historic facade that faces Morgan Street.
Because the word “boutique” is fun to use, I will mention that the Ace will be a boutique hotel.
