Mystery (Moxy?) Hotel starts construction in River North

Moxy Hotel

Caisson work is underway at the new Moxy Hotel, 530 North LaSalle Street, in River North.

With little fanfare, Pepper Construction has begun foundation work on what some believe (C.A.B. included) will be a new Moxy Hotel in River North at 530 North LaSalle Drive. A permit was filed back in November for the site, calling for an 8-story hotel on caissons. Well, we can all agree there’s definitely caisson work going on, as the big blue Stalworth machines are ripping into the soil as we speak.

The named architect on the permit works at DLR Group. A blog post on DLR’s website names Moxy By Marriott as a brand they work with. The Marriott News Center page names Chicago as a destination for a new Moxy Hotelk in 2017. It’s funky math, but it kind of adds up. I’m sticking with the Moxy tag on this one until told I’m wrong.

Cubs continue to get their office in order

THE CUBS WON THE WORLD SERIES!

Also, construction continues on the “triangle lot” site at Wrigley Field for what will be the new office building of the Chicago Cubs, the Major League Baseball team that won the 2016 World Series.

FACT: Every team in every major sport has waited longer for a championship season than the Chicago Cubs.

The six-story office building already houses the new 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, which provides the modern amenities and creature comforts the team clearly needed to push them to the 2016 World Series Championship.

And now, a photo gallery of construction progress, featuring 17 pictures. 17. Kris Bryant, #17 of the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, and reigning National League Most Valuable Player.

Coincidence? Probably not.

Construction Update: The Cubs’ “Triangle” Office Building

Chicago Cubs Triangle Office building

The Ernie Banks statue stands tall in front of the triangle-lot office building.

It’s not a triangle like Phil Jackson and Tex Winter brought to the Bulls’ offense. It’s the triangle that used to be the Red and Purple lots at Wrigley Field. And it’s where the Chicago Cubs are now developing a new 6-story office building that will also includes the team’s 30,000-square-foot clubhouse.

Designed by VOA Associates, the new facility is being built by Pepper Construction. Which is strange, because I could swear I’ve seen several NO PEPPER signs around Wrigley Field.

SMASHotels’ Marriott Autograph Hotel Rises in Streeterville

Marriott Autograph Hotel

Pepper Construction crews work on the new Marriott Autograph Hotel in Streeterville.

The Ivy Boutique Hotel in Streeterville has a wonderful rooftop deck. And as everyone in Chicago knows, rooftop decks were made for construction spectating.

Directly across the street from Ivy, at 228 East Ontario Street, the ECD Company and SMASHotels are erecting a brand new Marriott Autograph Hotel. The 22-story hotel, designed by Chicago-based Koo Architecture,  will have 200 rooms when completed (often referred to as “keys” in developer-speak.)

The Marriott Autograph is being jammed into such a tight space, it’s difficult to get a good view of Pepper Construction at work. Which is why you should get a room at Ivy, head up on the roof with The Drifters, and watch for yourselves.
